Perturbation theory of spherically symmetric self-similar black holes
The theory of perturbations of spherically symmetric self-similar black holes is presented, in the Newman-Penrose formalism. It is shown that the wave equations for gravitational, electromagnetic, and scalar waves are separable, though not decoupled. A generalization of the Teukolsky equation is given. Monopole and dipole modes are treated. The Newman-Penrose wave equations governing polar and ...
متن کامل2 00 2 Adjoint operators , gauge invariant perturbations , and covariant symplectic structure for black holes in string theory
Expressions for the general and complete perturbations in terms of Debye potentials of static charged black holes in string theory, valid for curvature below the Planck scale, are derived starting from a decou-pled set of equations and using Wald's method of adjoint operators. Our results cover both extremal and nonextremal black holes and are valid for arbitrary values of the dilaton coupling ...
متن کاملBlack Holes and String Theory
This is a short summary of my lectures given at the Fourth Mexican School on Gravitation and Mathematical Physics. These lectures gave a brief introduction to black holes in string theory, in which I primarily focussed on describing some of the recent calculations of black hole entropy using the statistical mechanics of D-brane states. The following overview will also provide the interested stu...
متن کاملCaged Black Holes: Black Holes in Compactified Spacetimes I – Theory
In backgrounds with compact dimensions there may exist several phases for black objects including the black-hole and the black-string, and the phase transition between them raises puzzles and touches fundamental issues such as topology change, uniqueness and cosmic censorship. No analytic solution is known for the black hole, and moreover, one can expect approximate solutions only for very smal...
متن کاملQuantum theory of black holes.
A solvable 2-dimensional conformally invariant midi-superspace model for black holes is obtained by imposing spherical symmetry in 4-dimensional conformally invariant Einstein gravity. The Wheeler-DeWitt equation for the theory is solved exactly to obtain the unique quantum wave functional for an isolated black hole with fixed mass. By suitably relaxing the boundary conditions, a non-perturbati...
